Target is adding a sustainable spin to wine night with the introduction of Collective Good, a new line of wines encased in recycled paper bottles, just in time for Earth Month.


At first, a wine bottle resembling a milk carton may appear unusual. However, once you hold Collective Good's paper bottle, the benefits—both sensible and practical—quickly become clear.


Traditionally, glass has been the primary material used for wine packaging, but it is also among the most carbon-intensive options in the industry. The manufacturing of glass involves high-temperature furnaces and substantial energy consumption, which often relies on fossil fuels. Furthermore, the weight and size of glass bottles lead to increased emissions during transportation. Although glass can technically be recycled, the rates of recycling differ significantly throughout the U.S., causing many glass bottles to ultimately end up in landfills.


The sustainability narrative extends well beyond packaging alone. Each winery in the Collective Good lineup implements its unique eco-friendly practices, including solar-powered production in Chile, regenerative agriculture in Spain, dry farming in Italy, and wind energy in California. This modest yet unified initiative seeks to provide more accessible and environmentally friendly wine options.


This marks the first instance of a major U.S. retailer launching paper wine bottles on a national level. While smaller brands have experimented with similar ideas in specific locations, Target's vast presence makes this a significant breakthrough—indicating that sustainable packaging is poised to enter the mainstream.
