Houston Hopes to See Tari Eason Back Soon, But Timetable Remains Unclear

The Houston Rockets (24-12) keep racking up wins, but they're nearly a month into life without third-year forward Tari Eason. Eason last appeared in a December 14 Emirates NBA Cup 2024 semifinal loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and he's since missed 10 consecutive games due to lingering soreness in his lower left leg. The leg in question is the same one that required surgery in March, making the Rockets particularly cautious.

Though Eason has been listed in various ways on the team's injury report—out, doubtful, questionable—he hasn't actually stepped on the court since the initial "out" notice on December 19. Head coach Ime Udoka and team officials say imaging results are encouraging and show no repeat of last year's season-ending setback. But the Rockets want the soreness to fully subside, especially since the team is thriving near the top of the Western Conference standings and they can afford to avoid any potential setbacks. Eason has reportedly taken part in at least portions of recent team practices.

Before Tuesday's game in Washington, Udoka suggested that Thursday's contest against the Memphis Grizzlies might be a viable target for Eason's return. However, a recent illness complicated his status, and as of midweek, Eason is still labeled as doubtful. With fellow frontcourt player Jabari Smith Jr. now out with a fractured left hand, Houston's depth has taken a further hit, making Eason's return all the more critical.
